Turning T-shirts to Money

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Most dream jobs probably entail doing about as little work as one can get away with, maybe even doing nothing more than getting dressed in the morning. Maybe yours simply entails surfing the web and going about your business on your own schedule and on your own terms. Jason Sadler had such a dream.

“I was laying bed at 3am racking my brain for a way to make some extra money without actually “working” and it came to me… I wear shirts every day of my life, no matter what, and should let people choose what shirts I wear,” says the 28-year-old Entrepreneur.

Not only did his dream came true, but he made over $80 thousand last year doing it!  All he has to do is just put on a different a t-shirt every day, with his sponsor’s logos on them, and then use various forms of social media, including Twitter and vlogs, to advertise himself and Voilà; money in the bank.  Talk about telecommuting!  His dream has gotten so big, that he now employs another man, Evan White, his West coast partner to wear a different t-shirt each day as well.

Although he’s expanding, there may not be enough of a market for all of us to copy Mr. Adler’s idea, but t-shirts aren’t just a way to advertise a company.  They could also advertise youOne company designed a line of t-shirts that advertise your personal cover letter or resume.  They suggest that you have several hard copies of your resume on hand when you wear your shirt in public.  If you’re the crafty type, you can design your own shirt at Custom Ink.

To all of those web entrepreneurs out there, Jason said to T-shirt Magazine Online that, “the first and most important thing is that nothing is an overnight success.”

ChumBonus – How it works

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

We’ve met so many people over the past few months since our launch – and it’s been great.  But from time to time we get a few of you who email us to ask us how ChumBonus works.  To make it easy, we thought we’d post a quick overview for those who haven’t yet figured us out. Let us know if you still have questions.

How We Work:

1. A client posts a job on the ChumBonus site for free and declares a bonus amount they are willing to pay to the person who refers the candidate that is ultimately hired by the client.  The bonus acts in the same way an employee referral bonus works within a company.  Clients can also elect to designate an amount they will donate to charity when a hire is made.

2. The referrer checks out the ChumBonus site and looks for job listings that match their “chum’s” qualifications.

3. With a click of a button, referrers can send a link to the job description to their chum.

4. The chum reviews all the details about the job and applies right on the ChumBonus site.

5. From there, the potential hirer reviews the candidate’s resume and decides if the applicant is a viable candidate for the job and if so, initializes their internal screening process.

6. When the applicant is hired, the referrer receives their referral bonus – usually within four weeks.

7. As an added feature, ChumBonus enables referrers to donate a portion of their referral bonus to a charity of their choice. Users simply choose this option on the ChumBonus site.

Of course, if you still have questions or comments, don’t hesitate to contact us.  We would love to hear from you.

Whirlwind First Week after Official Launch

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

When the phone rang at 8:30 on Wednesday morning and the person on the other end said they had just heard about ChumBonus on radio station WTOP (103.5 FM here in DC) and were interested in signing up as a client my heart started racing.  I guess my expectation should have been that our excellent PR team would have insured we would get radio coverage, but I was floored.  Clients were calling us.

The Washington Business Journal (http://tinyurl.com/ydtd8by) had picked up our press release and WTOP had mentioned it.  There was an immediate uptick in the number of people registering on the site and our inboxes were filling up with friends writing to congratulate us.  And, clients were registering on the site and posting jobs.  High paying jobs with high bonuses for people who referred their friends.

Later when Potomac Tech Wire included us in their daily e-mail blast, the ball really got rolling and people started referring friends to jobs.  It was all a little overwhelming.  This is not our first startup but it is the first that virtually every company and every individual with an internet connection can participate in and so far the buzz has been great.

It was a good first week.  ChumBonus is up, and off and running.

Does It Get Any Better? Doubt It!

Friday, November 20th, 2009

As a new Account Executive for ChumBonus, I must say, the company’s too good to be true! When’s the last time anyone was able to speak passionately about their career and mean it? Well, the answer to that question dear friends is, today. For those of you who still aren’t familiar with us here at ChumBonus…get familiar! It’ll be worth your while!

Our own fanfare

Monday, October 5th, 2009

With a sense of excitement, awe and relief , the site is ready for the viewing public, as a beta <cough cough>. As the head of technology, I am extremely proud to unveil chumbonus.com.

I pictured this moment quite a few times as the months of product vision, design, development, testing, product re-vision, more development, more testing and finally fit, finish and configuration. At the very moment the baby has left the nest, I naively realized, and reflected that that was the easy part.

Now the journey really begins.

The life of an entrepreneur and startup co-founder is laden with traps, decisions and de-motivating challenges. But I can safely say, that today is one of my most proudest days. To create something from nothing and see other people use it and dig it, is amazingly gratifying.

I cannot wait to post about the full life-cycle, the referral, the application, the evaluation and the hire. To actually find someone a job from something we created is something that occurs to many people every day, but to me, that day with ChumBonus is not far away and I am so looking forward to it.

To take this to that step – we have a laundry list of to-do items in basecamp that we will implement in the coming weeks. The first one being to implement the clickatell SMS gateway for txt alerts and notifications. I know enough to be dangerous in the mobile space and how this should work, but I think that the carriers have something unexpected up their sleeves.

If you have any feedback on the beta, please let us know, whichever tool you feel compelled and is easiest to get those comments to us.

Thanks to everyone for helping us and especially our families for supporting us. Houston we have lift off.

Looking for Beta Launch Participants

Friday, August 28th, 2009

We are excited to announce that ChumBonus is close to a private Beta launch and we are looking for companies that hire IT professionals in the Washington, DC area who wish to participate. This is a great opportunity to get involved on the ground floor with a new Social Media Recruiting site with the following features:

  1. ChumBonus is a success-based model with free postings so you only incur costs when you hire someone
  2. Uses the power of social media to reach people not on the traditional job boards
  3. Easy to navigate site that doesn’t require a steep learning curve and is an adjunct to your current technology, not a cumbersome replacement.

For a description of our innovative model, see the About entry in the Pages section on the right rail of this page. We can be reached at sales@chumbonus.com with questions or to reserve your spot in the Beta. Thanks!

ChumBonus – Who do you know?

Old Dogs, New Tricks and Progress

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

You would hope at this point in our careers we would know better than to believe everything we hear including delivery dates for software, but alas, this is not the case.

I remember a cartoon that was in the opening pages of a Software Development Life-Cycle Methodology (SDLC) book that I read that showed step 7 as “then some miracle happens.” We are huge crowdsourcing junkies and believe in the power of the model but like any relatively new process, there are kinks to be worked out. We and our partners at TopCoder have now officially broken step 7 into less miraculous and smaller steps and are on a good path to a launch. The framework is finished, the front end is almost done, the test cases are built and we are flushing out the deployment documentation.

Having said all that, there is no way I am going to put another date out there for a launch, but suffice to say it will be sooner rather than later.

On the sales front we have a number of clients identified as beta users of the site. They vary from IT consulting firms to Government Contractors so we should get some valuable feedback. We also have agreement from several large and small charities who will be sharing our information with their donor base in the hopes that they will use ChumBonus and share a portion of any bonuses earned with charity.

Thanks for your patience and interest and stay tuned.
